Mission
Statement
Thembisa's aim is to give a chance in life to some of South Africa's
disadvantaged people by working in partnership with grassroots development
projects. One focus is on small start-up projects unable to attract
funding elsewhere.Thembisa is seeking to grow in order to fund more
projects.
The work so far
Thembisa, established in April 1988, is a UK registered charity
based in Oxford and run by volunteers in the UK and South Africa.
- Funds are raised through donations, events, Christmas card
sales etc.
- All projects are vetted before being adopted, their progress
is monitored, and reports published in the annual newsletter,
"Thembisa Today". (see below)
- The Trusts finances are handled by Charities
Aid Foundation (CAF).
- Administrative costs are covered through the membership
scheme so that 100% of all donations are given to
projects.
At the time of the 21st celebrations in 2009, around 70 projects have been helped by Thembisa. In 20 years almost £250 000 was raised. Projects are all at the grassroots and as diverse as various buildings, clean water supply, employment opportunities, agricultural and assorted self help training schemes, micro-loan schemes, leadership training, social empowerment, handcrafts, nutrition, orphanages, and more.
